Choosing the right photographer
You have decided you need photos. Is it Senior Photos, Branding Photos, Family Photos, or Maternity Photos?
Not all photographers are the same. There are no two photographers alike. There are several reasons why we are all so different, here are some things to take into consideration when choosing a professional photographer. We see it on Facebook group pages all the time, “I need a great photographer”. But there is so much more than the popular vote
How can you make sure you hire the best photographer to capture your photographs?
Knowledge
Not everyone who owns a camera knows how to use the camera. Are they knowledgeable about low light, off-camera flash, natural light, full sun? Copyright laws, editing know-how. Backing up photos or photo delivery? So many things go into play so letting your photographer know your expectations of when, where, and how you want to achieve your photos is important.
Style & Editing
Look at the photographer's portfolio. Is it the color, lighting, vibe, editing style you like? If it isn’t, then probably want to skip them. You can send inspiration to your photographer too and see if they can achieve that style, if it is outside their style, they may say no. Not every photographer edits things out like acne, or stray hairs, or distractions in the back of the photo. Do you need those editing skills in a photographer?
Services
“I need a photographer” For what type of session? Not all photographers photograph everything. There are car photographers, product photographers, real estate photographers, newborn photographers, stillbirth photographers, family photographers, and the list goes on! Look to see if they do what you are looking for. If you like their work and they don’t, you can ask them if they are interested. Do they offer printed photographs, do they offer the option to design albums for you?
Experience
The first time you got on a bike it might not have gone smoothly right? The more times you rode it the easier it became. Same with photography. A photographer learns more and more the longer they have that camera in hand. Doesn’t mean someone knew doesn’t know what they are doing but take in all the factors, and especially look at the photos.
Reviews
Have other people given them reviews? Do they vibe with what you are looking for?
Personality
If you need someone to hype-up your children, talk to your wedding guest, or make you feel comfortable during your photo shoot, then hiring a photographer who is going to fit your needs is so important.
Pricing & Budget
While this seems to be a default for people, we understand that budget is important, but every single photographer charges different. Some might be $50, some might be $5000. Business photographers have business costs, pay taxes, more gear etc. While hobby photographers may be doing it for extra cash and or practice. They may be fulltime photographers or shoot once a week. There is no right or wrong answer here.
When it comes down to it, its not just one factor but many that can help you determine what photographer is best for you and what you are needing photos for!
Also, want to note in a world where AI exists now, please make sure they are a legit business/photographer.
